Adds DePasquale, « A good running shoe has enough cushion and support for repetitive, high-impact exercise, but is responsive and lightweight enough for logging miles at all different speeds. » 

Finally, making sure your shoes have a wide toe box (aka the front section of the shoe that houses your toes) can help you run comfortably and blister-free. « If the shoe is tight and has a small toe box, be it in width or depth, this will prevent the toes from having free space and movement and lead to an array of injuries, » Dr. Rahimi warns.

A final note on safety: Don’t forget to replace your long-distance running shoes when they begin to show signs of wear. Dr. Rahimi suggests looking out for increasingly soft or « spongy » soles and weak laces « Runners should replace their shoes every 300-500 miles.
